NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Transportation officials are taking steps to try to curb the number of traffic fatalities in Tennessee.

As of Oct. 17, they say there have been 800 people killed on Tennessee roadways in 2013. That's about the same number of fatalities around this time last year.

Transportation Department Commissioner John Schroer says the daily traffic fatality figure on the department's message boards across the state will be updated each weekday and will be compared with the number of fatalities on the same date in 2012.

Schroer says he hopes that seeing the fatality numbers on a daily basis will help drivers make better decisions.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will continue to focus on specific DUI and seat belt enforcement efforts that will include special enforcement campaigns throughout the upcoming holiday travel season.
