A high school student from Maryland was arrested for allegedly planning a school shooting. The Montgomery County Police Department said the 18-year-old Alex Ye detailed his plans in a 129-page document.
According to NBC News, a witness who spent time with Ye at a psychiatric facility tipped off the police about his plans.
"In the document, Ye writes about committing a school shooting and strategizes how to carry out the act. Ye also contemplates targeting an elementary school and says that he wants to be famous," the department said in a statement.
Investigators also uncovered internet searches, drawings, and other documents relating to threats of mass violence.
Ye claims that the 129-page manifesto was nothing more than a work of fiction and put a disclaimer at the beginning.
"This is not threat of violence, nor does it represent the author's beliefs," Ye wrote.
Ye was taken into custody and charged with threats of mass violence.
"The charges are extremely serious, involving alleged threats to harm others," Montgomery County Public Schools said in a statement. "We value and appreciate the close collaboration between MCPS and MCPD in this matter, which is an example of our shared commitment to identify and address potential threats with due process before they materialize."
